For carbon anode type aluminium smelters, a key pathway to lower the GHG emissions is via carbon capture. It means the gas cleaning systems are expanded with an additional cleaning process to remove CO2 from the pot ventilation gases.
This is totally new for our industry. Some desktop studies have been done and a few papers have been published and only in 2025 the first industrial pilot scale tests will be conducted. There is a lot to learn still, as everyone fully understands.
To create an understanding of which processes to apply in primary aluminium smelting and how some of these can be integrated in smelting operations, a one day training course is developed by Kensington Technology's Stephan Broek in close collaboration with professor Dr. Ir. Geert Versteeg of the Rijksuniversiteit of Groningen, The Netherlands. The course is part of the Light Metals program and organized by the professional development team at TMS.
